Note on IIMs: The table highlights IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore and IIM Calcutta as representative flagship CAT-based institutions. However, CAT is the principal entrance examination for admission to the two-year MBA/PGP programmes across the IIM system, subject to each IIM’s individual eligibility, sectional cut-offs, shortlisting formula and final selection process. Other major IIMs that students should also consider include IIM Lucknow, IIM Kozhikode, IIM Indore, IIM Mumbai, IIM Shillong, IIM Udaipur, IIM Tiruchirappalli, IIM Raipur, IIM Ranchi, IIM Rohtak, IIM Kashipur, IIM Visakhapatnam, IIM Nagpur, IIM Amritsar, IIM Bodh Gaya, IIM Sambalpur, IIM Sirmaur and IIM Jammu, among others. Students should refer to the dedicated “IIMs in India” page on MBA4U for the complete institute-wise comparison.

Official IIM admission pages confirm that CAT is used in the flagship MBA/PGP admission process at institutions such as IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, IIM Calcutta and IIM Indore, while each institute applies its own subsequent selection criteria.

Important: Fees, programmes, eligibility, cutoffs, entrance-exam acceptance and placement figures can change. Treat changing figures as indicative and verify the current admission notice and placement report directly on the institution’s official website.

1. CAT: The Broadest MBA Entrance Route

If you are going to take only one major MBA entrance examination, CAT usually gives you the widest access to highly selective management institutes.

CAT scores are used by:

  • IIMs
  • several IIT management departments
  • FMS Delhi
  • MDI Gurgaon
  • SPJIMR
  • XIM University
  • IMT Ghaziabad
  • Goa Institute of Management
  • Great Lakes
  • MICA
  • several NITs
  • many other non-IIM business schools

CAT 2026 is scheduled for 29 November 2026, as also reflected in the current XIM University admission schedule.

What makes CAT different?

CAT is not simply an “IIM exam”.

Its score has become a common currency across a large section of Indian management admissions.

However, CAT registration does not automatically mean you have applied to FMS, MDI, SPJIMR, XIMB, IMT or most other non-IIM institutes.

Those institutes generally require separate applications.

CAT shortlist strategy

An aspirant can divide options into:

Very competitive CAT colleges

  • IIM Ahmedabad
  • IIM Bangalore
  • IIM Calcutta
  • FMS
  • SPJIMR
  • MDI Gurgaon

Strong additional CAT options

  • IIT MBA departments
  • XIMB
  • IMT Ghaziabad
  • GIM
  • Great Lakes
  • IMI
  • selected NIT management departments

Do not confuse an institute’s minimum qualifying percentile with the percentile at which admission becomes likely.

Academic history, category, work experience, gender/academic diversity and interview performance can materially affect final selection.

2. XAT: The Most Important Exam to Add After CAT

For many CAT aspirants, XAT is the logical second examination.

Why?

Because it gives direct access to XLRI and is also accepted by numerous other private B-schools.

The official XAT 2027 schedule is:

  • Registration opened: 15 July 2026
  • Registration closes: 6 December 2026
  • Admit card: around 20 December 2026, tentative
  • Exam: 3 January 2027, 2 PM–5 PM

Major XAT-accepting colleges

  • XLRI
  • XIM University
  • IMT Ghaziabad
  • Goa Institute of Management
  • Great Lakes
  • MICA
  • K J Somaiya
  • BIMTECH

XLRI confirms XAT as an admissions route for its BM and HRM programmes.

For the 2024–26 BM/HRM graduating cohort, XLRI reported an average salary of ₹31.40 lakh and median of ₹29 lakh across the combined placement process.

Should a CAT student also take XAT?

For most serious MBA aspirants, yes.

The incremental preparation is manageable because much of the aptitude foundation overlaps, while XAT adds its distinctive Decision Making component.

Skipping XAT removes XLRI from your shortlist completely.

3. NMAT: Essential for NMIMS Aspirants

NMAT by GMAC is particularly important for candidates targeting NMIMS.

For the 2026 testing cycle:

  • Registration: 20 August–10 October 2026
  • Exam delivery: 2 November–20 December 2026
  • Retakes are available within the notified window.

The official NMAT information also stresses an important point:

NMAT exam registration and B-school applications are separate.

For NMIMS MBA 2027, after obtaining the NMAT registration ID, candidates must separately complete the NMIMS application process.

The regular NMIMS MBA eligibility shown for the current cycle requires a bachelor’s degree with at least 50% aggregate marks.

Why add NMAT?

It provides diversification.

Suppose your CAT day goes badly because of one difficult section. NMAT gives you an independent score and another admission pathway.

4. SNAP: Gateway to Symbiosis MBA Institutes

SNAP is the entrance examination for selected MBA programmes under Symbiosis International (Deemed University).

Key institutes include:

  • SIBM Pune
  • SCMHRD
  • SIIB
  • SIBM Bengaluru
  • other participating Symbiosis institutes

For SNAP 2026, the official test dates are:

  • 13 December 2026
  • 19 December 2026
  • 26 December 2026

Candidates may appear for up to three tests, with the better score used according to the notified system.

Registration closes on 25 November 2026, with results scheduled for 12 January 2027.

One common mistake

You generally need to pay separately for:

  • SNAP registration; and
  • the programme/institute applications you want considered.

The SNAP site currently lists ₹2,550 per test plus ₹1,000 per programme, apart from applicable taxes.

So plan the number of Symbiosis programmes before paying.

5. CMAT: Useful for Expanding the College List

CMAT can be valuable for students looking beyond the small group of ultra-selective CAT/XAT colleges.

It is accepted by numerous AICTE-approved management institutes and can also become relevant to Maharashtra admissions depending on the applicable CAP rules.

Examples of institutes that may use CMAT in applicable admission routes include:

  • K J Somaiya
  • BIMTECH
  • several regional PGDM institutes
  • participating Maharashtra MBA/MMS institutes under notified rules

BIMTECH’s 2027 admissions information, for example, lists CMAT 2027 among accepted scores for relevant PGDM programmes alongside CAT, XAT, GMAT and MAT.

Who should take CMAT?

CMAT is especially useful if:

  • your expected CAT score is uncertain;
  • you want more mid-range college options;
  • you are interested in Maharashtra;
  • you want an additional national-level score for later admission cycles.

6. MAH MBA/MMS CET: Important for Maharashtra

For students targeting Mumbai, Pune and other Maharashtra management colleges, MAH MBA/MMS CET deserves separate attention.

The Maharashtra CAP ecosystem includes institutions such as:

  • JBIMS
  • SIMSREE
  • PUMBA
  • other university and private MBA/MMS institutes in Maharashtra

JBIMS conducts its MMS admissions through the applicable Maharashtra admission process, and the institute published its 2026–27 MMS admission notices through its official portal.

Is JBIMS only through MAH CET?

No simple statement should be used for every candidate.

Admission can depend on:

  • Maharashtra State candidature
  • All India candidature
  • exam accepted under that year’s CAP rules
  • reservation/category
  • seat type

Therefore, check the State CET Cell’s current CAP brochure rather than relying on an old cutoff article.

7. MAT: A Large Backup Network

The Management Aptitude Test is conducted by AIMA.

AIMA states that MAT has been used for management admissions since 1988 and connects students with 600+ B-schools.

For the December 2026 session:

  • PBT: 20 December 2026
  • CBT: 27 December 2026

MAT is particularly useful for students building a broad safety portfolio beyond CAT/XAT.

However, AIMA itself advises candidates to verify the programme’s recognition and confirm directly with individual colleges that the MAT score is being accepted for that admission cycle.

That advice is worth following.

8. ATMA: Another Alternative MBA Entrance Route

ATMA is conducted by the Association of Indian Management Schools.

The official site describes ATMA as an entrance examination for MBA, PGDM and allied management admissions, subject to the admission regulations applicable to participating institutions.

ATMA partner listings include institutions across India, including management schools in Delhi NCR, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Odisha and other regions.

When should you consider ATMA?

Consider it if you want:

  • additional admission options;
  • regional business schools;
  • a fallback after CAT/XAT;
  • colleges that explicitly accept ATMA under current admission criteria.

Do not assume every ATMA-listed institution offers the same quality or placement outcome. Verify individually.

9. MICAT: For MICA Ahmedabad

MICA follows a specialist admission process.

To apply to its PGDM-C/PGDM programmes, candidates need at least one of:

  • CAT
  • XAT
  • GMAT

and must also take MICAT.

For 2027–29, MICA lists:

  • PGDM-C duration: 2 years
  • intake: 180 for the listed PGDM-C programme
  • indicative fee: ₹29.50 lakh
  • minimum bachelor’s requirement: 50%.

Who should target MICA?

Students strongly interested in:

  • advertising
  • branding
  • consumer behaviour
  • media
  • communications
  • digital marketing
  • strategic marketing

should consider MICAT.

It is not simply another general MBA entrance examination.

10. XGMT: Additional Route to XIM University

XIM University runs the XGMT as one admission route for several programmes.

For MBA-BM 2027, candidates can apply through:

  • XAT
  • CAT
  • GMAT
  • XGMT.

XGMT is scheduled for 17 January 2027, according to the current MBA-BM admission page.

This can be useful for candidates who want another opportunity to target XIM University even if their CAT/XAT performance is not as expected.

Which MBA Entrance Exams Should You Take?

You do not need to take every exam.

Use your target colleges to decide.

Strategy 1: Highly ambitious national shortlist

Take:

CAT + XAT

This gives access to most IIMs and many prominent non-IIM/private schools, plus XLRI.

Strategy 2: CAT + private-college diversification

Take:

CAT + XAT + NMAT

Useful if NMIMS is an important target.

Strategy 3: Broad premium private-school strategy

Take:

CAT + XAT + NMAT + SNAP

This covers major admission routes such as:

  • IIMs
  • XLRI
  • MDI
  • SPJIMR
  • XIMB
  • NMIMS
  • SIBM
  • SCMHRD
  • IMT
  • GIM
  • Great Lakes

Strategy 4: Maharashtra-focused student

Consider:

CAT + MAH MBA CET + CMAT

and possibly XAT/NMAT depending on target colleges.

Strategy 5: Maximum safety-net approach

You could combine:

CAT + XAT + CMAT/MAT/ATMA

This gives more options if the main national tests do not go according to plan.

Entrance Exam vs College Cutoff: Understand the Difference

A “cutoff” can refer to different things.

Eligibility cutoff

The minimum needed for consideration.

Interview shortlist cutoff

The score/percentile level actually used to call candidates for interviews.

Effective competitive percentile

The range in which successful applicants are often seen.

Final admission

Can depend on:

  • test score;
  • academics;
  • work experience;
  • interview;
  • written test;
  • diversity;
  • professional qualifications;
  • category.

Therefore:

90 percentile eligibility ≠ 90 percentile admission guarantee.

This distinction is essential when using MBA cutoff tables online.

How to Build Your MBA College List by Exam

A simple process works well.

Step 1: Select your core examination

For most national-level candidates, this will be CAT.

Step 2: Add complementary examinations

Example:

CAT → XAT → NMAT/SNAP depending on colleges.

Step 3: Create three college buckets

Dream

Admission would be difficult but worth applying.

Target

Your expected score/profile is reasonably aligned.

Safer

Your score is likely to be stronger relative to the institute’s usual applicant pool.

No college should be treated as a guaranteed admission.

Step 4: Track separate applications

Create columns for:

  • exam registration;
  • college application;
  • last date;
  • fee;
  • interview;
  • result.

This prevents one of the most common MBA admission mistakes: getting a good entrance score but missing the college’s separate application deadline.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which exam gives access to the most major MBA colleges?

CAT offers the broadest access to IIMs and a large number of major non-IIM MBA/PGDM institutes.

Is CAT enough for MBA admission?

It can be enough to create a substantial shortlist, but taking XAT adds XLRI and several other institutions. NMAT and SNAP are required for key institution-specific ecosystems such as NMIMS and Symbiosis.

Which colleges accept XAT?

Major examples include XLRI, XIM University, IMT Ghaziabad, GIM, Great Lakes, MICA and selected other institutes.

Which MBA colleges accept NMAT?

NMIMS is the most prominent NMAT-based institution. Other institutions may also accept NMAT for specific programmes, but students should verify current programme-level eligibility.

Which colleges accept SNAP?

SNAP is used by selected Symbiosis International University MBA programmes, including SIBM Pune and SCMHRD.

Which exam is needed for JBIMS?

JBIMS MMS admissions are linked to Maharashtra’s CAP admission framework. MAH MBA/MMS CET is particularly relevant, while All India routes depend on the examination and candidature rules specified for that year’s CAP process.

Is CMAT useful after CAT?

Yes. CMAT can broaden the number of MBA/PGDM options and is especially relevant for candidates considering selected AICTE-approved institutes and Maharashtra admissions.

Is MAT worth taking?

MAT can be useful as a backup because AIMA lists hundreds of participating B-schools. The quality and placement outcomes differ considerably, so college-level verification is necessary.

Can I apply to a college without applying separately after the entrance exam?

Often, no. Many colleges require their own application in addition to exam registration. NMAT and XIM University explicitly make this distinction in their current admission information.

Final Takeaway

The best way to use the Top MBA Colleges by Exam page is not to ask:

“Which MBA entrance exam is best?”

Instead ask:

“Which combination of exams gives me access to the colleges I genuinely want?”

For many students:

CAT + XAT is the strongest starting combination.

Add NMAT if NMIMS interests you.

Add SNAP if SIBM Pune, SCMHRD or other Symbiosis institutes are important.

Consider CMAT and MAH MBA CET if Maharashtra colleges form part of your strategy.

Use MAT or ATMA to broaden your backup choices.

And take MICAT only when MICA’s communications- and marketing-oriented programmes fit your career objective.

Your entrance-exam plan should eventually produce a balanced college shortlist:

Dream + Target + Safer options, spread across more than one examination wherever practical.

That protects you from relying on the outcome of a single three-hour test.
