Top MBA Colleges by Percentile in India 2026–27: CAT 70 to 99+ Percentile, Fees, Cutoffs & Placements
Explore top MBA colleges by percentile in India 2026–27. Compare MBA colleges for CAT 70, 80, 85, 90, 95 and 99+ percentile with cutoffs, fees, eligibility, placements and admission guidance.

A CAT percentile becomes genuinely useful only when you can translate it into a sensible MBA college shortlist.
A student scoring 99 percentile should not prepare the same application list as someone expecting 90 percentile. Similarly, a candidate around 80 percentile should not assume that an institute publishing an 80-percentile eligibility threshold is automatically a “safe” option.
That distinction is particularly important when searching for Top MBA Colleges by Percentile.
An institute may publish a minimum CAT cutoff of 80 or 85 percentile, yet the candidates finally shortlisted for interviews can have considerably stronger profiles. The reverse can also occur at profile-based schools, where academics, work experience, diversity, professional qualifications and interview performance make the entrance-test percentile only one component of selection.
For the current 2026–27 admission season, another point matters: CAT 2026 has not yet been conducted. It is scheduled for 29 November 2026, so most final institute-wise CAT 2026 shortlisting thresholds for the 2027–29 MBA batch are not yet available. Where a 2027–29 institute has already announced its admission process, this guide uses it; otherwise, the latest officially published 2026–28 criteria are used as reference and clearly treated as indicative.
What Does “MBA Colleges by Percentile” Actually Mean?
For this page, percentile refers mainly to CAT percentile.
This is deliberate. CAT is used by the IIMs and a large group of IIT management departments, university MBA programmes and private B-schools. XAT, CMAT and several other examinations also report percentile-based results, but a 90 percentile in CAT should not be treated as equivalent to a 90 percentile in XAT or CMAT.
Each exam has:
different candidates, different question papers, different score distributions and different participating colleges.
Therefore, this page uses CAT as the main benchmark. Students using XAT, NMAT, SNAP, CMAT, MAH MBA CET or other examinations should also refer to MBA4U’s Top MBA Colleges by Exam section.
Quick Guide: MBA Colleges by CAT Percentile
Before looking at the detailed college table, this broad planning framework can help.
| CAT Percentile Range | MBA4U Shortlisting Approach | Examples Worth Researching |
|---|---|---|
| 99–100 percentile | Build an ambitious shortlist around the most selective CAT institutions | IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, IIM Calcutta, FMS Delhi and other highly selective IIMs |
| 95–99 percentile | Keep leading IIMs/IITs plus strong non-IIM institutions in the basket | IIM Lucknow, IIM Kozhikode, IIM Indore, IIM Mumbai, SPJIMR, MDI Gurgaon, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi |
| 90–95 percentile | Expand beyond IIMs into IITs and major private/public B-schools | VGSoM IIT Kharagpur, XIMB, IMT Ghaziabad, IIT Madras, IIT Roorkee, selected IIM possibilities depending on category/profile |
| 85–90 percentile | Profile becomes increasingly important; broaden the shortlist | IIT Kanpur, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, GIM, Great Lakes, TAPMI, IMI Delhi, FORE, K J Somaiya and similar institutes |
| 80–85 percentile | Prioritise institutes where composite profile and multiple tests matter | IIT Kanpur eligibility route, NIT management schools, LIBA, LBSIM, BIMTECH and selected university/private programmes |
| 70–80 percentile | Build a wider value-for-money and regional shortlist | BIMTECH and other credible private/university/NIT options depending on programme and exam |
| Below 70 percentile | Do not select a college solely because it accepts the score; scrutinise approval, fees and placement outcomes carefully | Consider CMAT/MAT/ATMA/state exams and recognised regional institutions |
Important: The table above is an MBA4U application-planning framework, not an official cutoff table and not a prediction of admission. Institute-specific minimums can be substantially lower than actual interview competitiveness, and category-specific requirements can differ.
IIM Bangalore itself explicitly states that the published minimum percentile is used only for the first shortlist and that the scores of candidates actually called for interviews were higher. For the latest published 2026–28 process, its reference minimum for General candidates was 85 overall, with sectional requirements, while subsequent shortlisting also incorporated academics, work experience/professional qualifications and diversity.

Note: Fees, programmes, entrance examinations, intake, percentile requirements and admission formulas may change. “Percentile cutoff” in the table refers to officially published minimums where these are available—not an assurance that candidates at that percentile will receive an interview call or admission.
For example, VGSoM IIT Kharagpur officially required a minimum overall CAT 2025 percentile of 90 for General/EWS candidates in its 2026–28 process, but candidates crossing 90 were still evaluated using CAT performance and an application rating involving academics, professional qualifications and work experience.
IIT Kanpur similarly specified 80 percentile as a minimum for General/EWS/OBC applicants for 2026–28, but its final selection score also incorporated academics, work experience and personal interview performance.
99+ CAT Percentile: How Should You Shortlist?
A 99+ percentile gives a candidate access to a much wider application universe, but it still does not make IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta or FMS “safe”.
The most selective institutes assess far more than the overall percentile.
IIM Ahmedabad states that selection for its flagship MBA involves CAT, previous academic performance, Analytical Writing Test and personal interview.
IIM Bangalore similarly uses CAT together with Class X, Class XII, bachelor’s performance, work experience or professional qualifications and diversity at the pre-interview stage.
FMS Delhi uses weighted CAT score as 50% of its final selection framework, with Class X, Class XII, Statement of Purpose discussion, extempore and interview contributing the remainder.
So even at 99+, apply across several institutions rather than assuming one famous school will convert.
95–99 Percentile: Still a Very Strong MBA Range
This is where shortlist design becomes especially important.
A candidate in this range can investigate combinations of established IIMs, IIT management schools and major non-IIM institutions such as SPJIMR and MDI.
SPJIMR is a particularly good example of why percentile alone is inadequate. Its current 2027–29 admission rules accept CAT or GMAT and allow both freshers and candidates with up to five years of work experience, while the institute uses profile-based and profile-cum-score approaches rather than operating as a simple “CAT percentile in, CAT percentile out” school.
Its combined PGDM/PGDM-BM Class of 2026 placement process reported an average CTC of ₹33.75 lakh and median of ₹32.85 lakh.
MDI also gives CAT substantial weight in shortlisting but incorporates academics, work experience and diversity. For example, its published 2026–28 PGDM-BFS criteria gave CAT 70% weight at the shortlisting stage, not 100%.
That is why a student at 96 percentile with excellent academics and relevant experience can have a different shortlist from another student at the same percentile.
90–95 Percentile: One of the Most Interesting Shortlisting Zones
Students around 90–95 percentile often make one of two mistakes.
Some apply only to IIMs and ignore strong IITs and private schools.
Others assume that every college advertising a 90-percentile cutoff is equally attainable.
A better approach is to diversify.
VGSoM IIT Kharagpur provides a useful official benchmark: its 2026–28 process required 90 overall CAT percentile for General/EWS candidates, 81 for OBC and 60 for SC/ST/PwD at the eligibility stage. Crossing the threshold did not guarantee WAT-PI shortlisting.
This range is also worth examining for XIMB, IMT Ghaziabad, GIM, IIT management departments and other schools depending on profile.
XIM University’s current 2027 MBA-BM process accepts CAT 2026, XAT 2027, GMAT or XGMT, requires at least 55% in a recognised bachelor’s degree and applies its own shortlisting process.
So an applicant around 92 percentile need not restrict themselves to a CAT-only strategy.
85–90 Percentile: Profile and College Selection Matter More
At this range, students should stop asking only, “What is the highest-ranked college I can get?”
The better question is:
Which colleges give my overall profile a realistic chance while also offering sensible fees, curriculum and placements?
IIM Kozhikode’s latest published PGP minimum for General candidates was 85 overall percentile with 75 sectional percentile, but the institute explicitly calls this only the Stage 1 minimum eligibility level. It is not a PI guarantee.
IIT Kanpur sets an 80-percentile General/EWS/OBC eligibility minimum in its 2026–28 process, yet shortlisting is further determined by the applicant pool and final selection incorporates CAT, academics, work experience and interview.
At 85–90, therefore, students can meaningfully investigate IIT Kanpur, other IIT/NIT programmes and established private schools such as GIM, Great Lakes, TAPMI, IMI, FORE, K J Somaiya and LIBA, depending on exact examination and profile.
80–85 Percentile: Do Not Underestimate Your Options
An 80–85 CAT percentile is not the end of an MBA search.
The number of realistic options expands if you consider:
institution profile, programme specialisation, fee, location, alternative examinations and your academic/work-experience profile.
IMT Ghaziabad’s current 2027 admission page, for example, does not publish a simplistic permanent CAT cutoff. It accepts CAT 2026, XAT 2027 or qualifying GMAT scores and evaluates academic performance, test scores, work experience, professional qualifications and overall profile.
K J Somaiya follows an even more explicit dual approach: its current admission process provides both cutoff-based and profile-based shortlisting, and accepts CAT, XAT, GMAT, NMAT and CMAT.
This is exactly why percentile pages should not become rigid “at 82 percentile, choose College X” charts.
70–80 Percentile: Focus Heavily on ROI and Credibility
At 70–80 percentile, the number of colleges willing to consider an applicant becomes much larger—but their quality also varies much more.
This is the point where due diligence becomes critical.
BIMTECH provides a useful official example. It states that its cutoff is not pre-defined and varies according to application quality and volume. For the 2025–27 batch, its published reference cutoffs included 75 percentile in CAT/XAT for the core PGDM and 70 for PGDM-IB, while some specialist programmes used still lower thresholds. BIMTECH itself cautions that these historical numbers are only references and can change.
Its 2027–29 admissions page currently lists a ₹14 lakh tuition fee for the flagship PGDM, with hostel and mess additional.
At this percentile, students should compare fee and placement quality very carefully rather than joining a college simply because it accepts their score.
Below 70 Percentile: Should You Still Pursue MBA Admission?
Possibly—but the decision needs more scrutiny.
A lower CAT percentile does not prevent you from taking another entrance exam.
Depending on timing, you can explore:
XAT, CMAT, MAT, ATMA, MAH MBA CET, university entrance tests or institution-specific tests.
This can be preferable to accepting an expensive programme with weak outcomes simply because admission is immediately available.
If the available college costs ₹15–20 lakh but offers limited recruiter transparency, weak internships and unclear placement reporting, one additional preparation cycle may be financially more sensible.
On the other hand, a recognised university or regional public institution with modest fees may still offer acceptable value even if its national brand is limited.
That decision has to be made college by college.
Minimum Cutoff vs Actual Competitive Percentile
This is the single most important concept on a percentile-based MBA page.
Suppose an institute publishes:
Minimum CAT percentile: 85
That means you may be eligible for the next stage.
It does not mean:
“85 percentile = interview confirmed.”
And it certainly does not mean:
“85 percentile = admission.”
IIM Bangalore explicitly says that the scores of candidates called for interview were higher than its published minimum first-shortlist cutoffs.
IIM Kozhikode describes its 85-percentile General CAT threshold as the minimum eligibility criterion for Stage 1, followed by further registration and shortlisting.
VGSoM combines CAT score with an application rating after its minimum threshold is cleared.
This is why MBA4U recommends displaying two concepts separately wherever possible:
Official Minimum Cutoff and Practical Shortlisting Range.
Do not label both simply “cutoff”.
Overall Percentile Is Not Enough: Check Sectional Cutoffs
A candidate can score a high overall CAT percentile and still lose an opportunity because one section falls below the institute’s requirement.
IIM Bangalore’s latest published reference criteria contained separate VARC, DILR and QA minimums alongside the aggregate cutoff.
IIM Kozhikode’s 2026–28 policy similarly specifies both overall and sectional CAT thresholds.
By contrast, IIT Kanpur’s FAQ states that it does not apply a sectional cutoff for its current MBA shortlisting process and considers overall cutoff instead.
Therefore, a student’s shortlist should be built from:
Overall percentile + sectional percentiles + category + academics + work experience + programme eligibility.
A single overall number is insufficient.
Why Two Students with the Same CAT Percentile Can Get Different Calls
Consider two hypothetical candidates, both with 94 percentile.
Candidate A has strong Class X and XII marks, a good graduation record and two years of relevant work experience.
Candidate B has the same CAT percentile but weaker past academics and no profile advantages.
Depending on the institute, their outcomes can differ because many selection formulas assign explicit weight to academics, work experience, diversity and interview performance.
IIT Kanpur’s published final-selection framework, for example, gives weight to CAT, academic performance, work experience, undergraduate performance and personal interview, with PI carrying substantial weight.
SPJIMR openly considers profile-based shortlisting.
GIM’s current admissions process likewise evaluates entrance-test performance alongside academics, work experience, interview and profile factors.
So the most useful MBA percentile guidance is always profile-aware.
General, EWS, OBC, SC, ST and PwD Cutoffs Can Differ
Another reason not to publish one universal percentile against every college is reservation-category variation.
VGSoM’s published 2026–28 minimums range from 90 for General/EWS to 60 for SC/ST/PwD.
IIM Kozhikode’s minimum overall CAT thresholds for the same 2026–28 cycle range from 85 for General to 55 for ST/PwD, with separate sectional requirements as well.
IIM Bangalore similarly publishes category-specific minimum percentile requirements.
Students should therefore always check the criterion corresponding to their own category rather than copying the General-category cutoff from an internet table.
CAT Percentile Should Not Be Your Only MBA College Filter
Once you have created a percentile shortlist, compare the remaining options on four practical dimensions.
First, total cost. Include tuition, hostel, mess, deposits, travel and education-loan interest.
Second, placement distribution. Median CTC is generally more informative than the highest package. FMS, for instance, reported ₹32.27 lakh average and ₹29.59 lakh median CTC for its 2024–26 batch.
Third, programme fit. A college strong in communications, analytics, HR or rural management may make more sense than a nominally higher-profile general MBA depending on your career objective.
Fourth, alternative offers. A ₹25 lakh programme and a ₹5 lakh public-university MBA should not be compared using branding alone.
How MBA4U Students Should Build a Percentile-Based Shortlist
A useful approach is to create three columns: Ambitious, Target and Safer.
Suppose you expect around 92 percentile.
Your ambitious group could include institutions where the interview threshold or competition is likely to stretch your profile.
Your target group should include programmes where your score and profile align more comfortably with published admission criteria.
Your safer group should consist of colleges where your score is reasonably above the historical or published screening level.
But even the “safer” column must never be interpreted as guaranteed admission.
The final list should ideally contain multiple institutions across these three groups and, where possible, more than one entrance exam.
A Note on IIMs
The table above does not list every IIM separately because MBA4U already has a dedicated IIMs page under:
Colleges → Top MBA Colleges → IIMs
CAT remains the principal entrance route for domestic admission to the flagship two-year management programmes across the IIM system, but each IIM applies its own eligibility, sectional cutoffs, academic weights and final-selection methodology.
Students researching other IIMs such as IIM Mumbai, IIM Shillong, IIM Udaipur, IIM Tiruchirappalli, IIM Raipur, IIM Ranchi, IIM Kashipur, IIM Nagpur, IIM Visakhapatnam, IIM Amritsar, IIM Bodh Gaya, IIM Jammu, IIM Sambalpur and IIM Sirmaur should use MBA4U’s dedicated IIM guide rather than assuming that the thresholds of IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore or Kozhikode apply to them.

You can research IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, IIM Calcutta, FMS Delhi and other highly selective IIMs, while also keeping institutions such as SPJIMR and MDI in the application basket. Admission remains profile- and institute-dependent.
Is 95 percentile enough for an IIM?
It can make a candidate eligible or competitive for some IIM processes, depending on institute, category, sectional scores and profile. It does not guarantee admission to any specific IIM.
Which MBA colleges can I target around 90 percentile?
Options worth investigating include IIT management departments, XIMB, IMT Ghaziabad, GIM and other established schools, in addition to relevant IIM possibilities depending on category and profile. VGSoM IIT Kharagpur officially used 90 percentile as its General/EWS minimum for 2026–28.
Is 85 percentile a good CAT score?
It can provide several credible MBA opportunities, but the quality of the shortlist depends heavily on academics, category, work experience, sectional scores and alternative entrance exams.
Can I get an IIT MBA at 80 percentile?
IIT Kanpur’s 2026–28 process listed 80 overall percentile as the minimum for GEN/EWS/OBC applicants, subject to additional academic eligibility and subsequent shortlisting. This should not be read as an 80-percentile admission guarantee.
Which colleges can I consider at 70–80 percentile?
BIMTECH is one example where the previous published core-PGDM CAT/XAT reference cutoff was 75 percentile, although the institute explicitly says cutoffs vary from year to year. Students should also investigate credible regional, university and specialist management programmes.
Should I choose a college based only on CAT percentile?
No. Compare fees, median placements, programme structure, recruiter mix, location, specialisation, total cost and your career goal.
Is the official cutoff the same as the actual admission cutoff?
Usually not. A published minimum may only make you eligible to enter the shortlisting process. Several institutions explicitly apply additional profile and interview criteria after that point.
Final Takeaway
The right way to use a Top MBA Colleges by Percentile page is not to treat CAT percentile as a college-allotment number.
A 99 percentile does not guarantee IIM Ahmedabad.
A 90 percentile does not guarantee VGSoM merely because its published General/EWS minimum is 90.
An 80 percentile does not guarantee IIT Kanpur merely because 80 is the published eligibility threshold for the relevant category.
Your MBA admission outcome is shaped by a combination of:
overall percentile + sectional scores + academics + category + work experience + diversity/profile factors + interview performance + institute-specific rules.
Use percentile to build the first shortlist. Then evaluate each college on fees, placement distribution, programme fit and career outcome.
Because CAT 2026 is still ahead, treat 2026–28 published cutoffs as reference points where 2027–29 policies have not yet been released. After CAT 2026 results and institute shortlisting criteria are published, this page should be updated with the new official numbers rather than continuing to display historical cutoffs as current.
