IM vs IIT MBA: Compare fees, placements, ROI, CAT cutoffs, eligibility and career opportunities in India to choose the right MBA college for 2027.

Choosing between an MBA from an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) and an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) can be more difficult than students initially expect.
Suppose you receive an MBA admission offer from an established IIM and another from IIT Bombay or IIT Delhi. Both institutions have strong academic reputations, recognised alumni networks and access to corporate recruiters. Yet the financial investment, classroom experience, career opportunities and long-term professional advantages may be different.
The obvious question is: Should you choose an IIM MBA for its management-focused reputation or an IIT MBA for its combination of business education, technology exposure and potentially attractive return on investment?
There is no universal answer.
An MBA from IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore or IIM Calcutta may offer opportunities that are quite different from those available at a recently established IIM. Similarly, an MBA from IIT Bombay or IIT Delhi cannot automatically be compared with every other IIT management programme.
The institution, programme, placement record, fees, student profile and intended career matter much more than the IIM or IIT label alone.
This detailed MBA4U.in guide compares IIM and IIT MBA programmes across admission eligibility, CAT percentile requirements, fees, placements, specialisations, return on investment and career opportunities to help you make an informed decision for the 2027–29 admission cycle.
1. IIM vs IIT MBA: Key Differences at a Glance
| Comparison Factor | IIM MBA | IIT MBA |
|---|---|---|
| Main institutional identity | Management education, leadership and business research | Technology, engineering, research and interdisciplinary education |
| MBA duration | Usually two years for flagship programmes | Usually two years for flagship full-time MBA programmes |
| Entrance examination | CAT for most flagship two-year programmes | CAT for most major full-time MBA programmes |
| Eligibility | Generally accepts graduates from multiple disciplines | Varies; some accept all disciplines, while others impose degree-specific conditions |
| Academic emphasis | Business strategy, management, leadership and functional disciplines | Management with varying exposure to technology, analytics, operations and innovation |
| Specialisation opportunities | Finance, marketing, consulting, HR, operations, analytics and others | Operations, analytics, finance, marketing, technology management and others |
| Course fees | Vary substantially across IIMs | Vary substantially across IITs; several offer comparatively lower tuition |
| Placements | Strong at established institutions, with programme-specific differences | Competitive at leading IIT management schools, with programme-specific differences |
| Alumni network | Management-focused alumni base | Wider technology and engineering alumni ecosystem alongside MBA alumni |
| Suitable for | Students seeking diverse managerial and leadership careers | Students seeking management careers, including technology-linked and analytical roles |
A common misconception is that IIMs only teach general management while IITs only offer technology-oriented MBAs.
That is not accurate.
IIMs increasingly offer courses in business analytics, artificial intelligence, digital transformation and technology strategy. Conversely, IIT management schools offer subjects such as marketing, finance, organisational behaviour and corporate strategy.
The difference is primarily in the programme ecosystem and relative strengths, rather than an absolute division of career opportunities.
2. Understanding MBA Education at IIMs and IITs
What makes an IIM MBA different?
The IIM system was developed with management education and research as its central purpose.
Institutions such as IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore and IIM Calcutta are widely recognised for their management education and corporate engagement.
Their MBA curricula typically include managerial economics, financial accounting, marketing, operations, organisational behaviour, business strategy and quantitative analysis.
Students also learn through case discussions, group projects, internships, simulations and industry interactions.
An IIM can be particularly attractive to candidates interested in management consulting, investment banking, marketing leadership, general management or strategic business roles.
However, experiences differ significantly between institutions. A mature IIM with decades of alumni engagement may provide a different recruitment environment from an institution established more recently.
What makes an IIT MBA different?
IITs are best known for their engineering, science and technology programmes. Several have established management schools offering full-time MBA degrees.
Prominent examples include:
- Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management (SJMSOM), IIT Bombay
- Department of Management Studies (DMS), IIT Delhi
- Department of Management Studies (DoMS), IIT Madras
- Vinod Gupta School of Management (VGSoM), IIT Kharagpur
- Department of Management Sciences, IIT Kanpur
- Department of Management Studies, IIT Roorkee
IIT management students may benefit from interdisciplinary collaboration, technology-driven projects, innovation centres and an academic environment connected with engineering and research.
This can be useful for students who want to pursue product management, business analytics, operations, digital transformation or technology consulting.
But an IIT MBA is not limited to technical careers. Graduates can also enter finance, consulting, marketing and general management, depending on the recruiters and opportunities available.
3. IIM vs IIT MBA: Which Is Better for Reputation and Recognition?
Both IIMs and IITs are respected institutions in India. Their recognition, however, can differ by industry and programme.
Established IIMs have particularly strong visibility in business education and management recruitment. Their alumni networks include senior executives, consultants, entrepreneurs and business leaders.
IITs have substantial institutional recognition in engineering, technology, entrepreneurship and research. Their management schools benefit from these broader ecosystems, but the size and maturity of the MBA alumni network differ from those of the institution overall.
This distinction matters.
A large IIT alumni network does not mean every alumnus is part of the MBA recruitment ecosystem. Similarly, the reputation of one IIM should not automatically be assigned to every other IIM.
What do official rankings indicate?
The Ministry of Education’s NIRF Management Rankings assess institutions using parameters including teaching, learning and resources, research, graduation outcomes, outreach and perception.
For example, the official 2025 Management Rankings placed IIT Delhi fourth, demonstrating that an IIT management programme can compete strongly within India’s management education landscape.
The NIRF rankings provide useful evidence, but they should not be your only decision criterion. They measure institutional performance across several dimensions rather than guaranteeing a particular placement outcome for an individual MBA student.
MBA4U recommendation: Compare the specific management schools, not simply the parent institutions’ overall reputations.
4. IIM vs IIT MBA: Admission Eligibility and CAT Requirements
Most prominent two-year MBA programmes at IIMs and IITs use CAT scores as part of their admission process.
However, appearing for CAT does not automatically make a candidate eligible for every IIM or IIT MBA programme.
Institutions may have different academic requirements, selection stages and application procedures.
Can non-engineering graduates apply?
Yes, non-engineering graduates can apply to many IIMs and several IIT MBA programmes.
For example, SJMSOM, IIT Bombay’s 2026–28 admission policy explicitly allows graduates from all disciplines. It specifies a bachelor’s degree with at least 60% marks or 6.5 CPI for general-category applicants, with the prescribed relaxation for SC, ST and PwD candidates.
On the other hand, VGSoM, IIT Kharagpur has more restricted qualifying-degree requirements. Its 2026–28 policy specifies relevant four-year bachelor’s qualifications or particular master’s degrees, with additional conditions.
Therefore, a B.Com, BA, BBA or B.Sc. graduate should not assume that every IIT MBA has identical eligibility rules.
Is CAT enough for admission?
No. A competitive CAT score is only one component.
Institutions may consider academic records, relevant work experience, academic or gender diversity, written assessments and personal interviews.
For the 2026–28 batch, IIT Bombay used CAT performance, academics, work experience and personal interview performance within its selection procedure.
Likewise, IIT Kharagpur used a multi-stage process involving shortlisting and written aptitude/personal interview assessment.
How much CAT percentile is required?
There is no single CAT percentile that applies to all IIMs or IITs.
An institution may publish a minimum qualifying threshold, but the actual shortlist depends on category, academic profile, programme, applicant pool and selection policy.
For example, IIT Kanpur’s 2026–28 admission process specified an initial overall CAT threshold of 80 percentile for general, EWS and OBC applicants. That is a historical, programme-specific eligibility condition—not a guaranteed admission percentile for 2027–29.
Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur
Students must distinguish between:
- Minimum qualifying percentile: the threshold needed to be considered.
- Shortlisting percentile: the score associated with receiving an interview call.
- Final selection: the admission decision after all selection components are evaluated.
For the 2027–29 intake, use CAT 2026 scores and the respective institutes’ updated admission policies.
5. IIM vs IIT MBA: College Comparison Table 2026–27
The following table covers established IIMs, newer IIMs and major IIT management schools.
To keep the comparison reliable, specific fees are shown only where corresponding official information could be verified. Otherwise, readers are directed to the latest official notice.
All fee figures and admission requirements refer to the stated historical intake unless otherwise indicated.
The salary column refers to official MBA placement compensation data, not average earnings across all graduates. Where a comparable current figure has not been independently verified, it is deliberately left unquoted. This avoids mixing CTC, fixed pay and Maximum Earning Potential (MEP).
How to read the figures: Salary is expressed in ₹ lakh per annum (LPA), usually as average CTC unless otherwise stated. CAT percentile figures are for the General/Unreserved category and represent the officially published minimum qualifying or initial shortlisting threshold—not the percentile that guarantees an interview or admission. Fees are for the full two-year programme unless specifically described as tuition-only or annual fees.

IIM Ahmedabad’s 2025 audited placement release states a mean compensation of ₹35.50 LPA and median of ₹34.59 LPA. Its 2026–28 CAT minimum for General candidates was 95 overall with 85 in each section.
IIM Bangalore’s 2026–28 PGP fee is ₹26 lakh, while IIM Indore’s published fee information establishes ₹24 lakh in core course fees plus an alumni fee and separately payable charges.
IIM Kozhikode’s ₹23.50 lakh figure comes from its 2025–27 fee circular, rather than its newer 2026–28 schedule; it should not be represented as a verified current fee.
Table B. Other IIMs — Updated Salary, CAT Cutoff and Fees

Verified official figures
IIM Ranchi’s official placements page reports an MBA average CTC of ₹19.26 LPA for academic year 2025–26, whereas its MBA-Business Analytics figure is ₹21.07 LPA. These should not be combined or substituted for one another.
IIM Nagpur’s admissions policy specifies 95 overall and 70 in each CAT section for General candidates. IIM Visakhapatnam specifies 82 overall and 70 sectional for its initial shortlist. Both are minimum-stage thresholds rather than admission guarantees.
The IIM Udaipur and IIM Visakhapatnam fee totals were calculated from their published 2026–28 fee instalments; IIM Raipur and IIM Tiruchirappalli explicitly publish their programme fees and applicable exclusions.
For IIM Sambalpur, the published gender-wise averages do not establish the complete-batch mean with sufficient precision for a salary comparison. Its figure should therefore be treated as contextual information, not a replacement for an official overall average CTC.
Table C. IIT Management Schools — Updated Salary, CAT Cutoff and MBA Fees

The strongest newly verified IIT salary figures are IIT Madras’s 2026 MBA batch average of ₹18.30 LPA and median of ₹18 LPA, and IIT (ISM) Dhanbad’s 2025 MBA figures of ₹10.48 LPA average and ₹10.38 LPA median.
IIT Bombay’s 2026–28 official fee schedule confirms ₹15,55,800 for General/EWS/OBC-NCL students and ₹7,55,800 for SC/ST/PwD students. IIT Kanpur’s admission criteria confirm a minimum overall CAT percentile of 80 for the General, EWS and OBC categories, with additional academic requirements.
Disclaimer: Salary figures are based on the specified official placement reporting years and are not guaranteed packages. CAT percentile cutoffs generally indicate minimum qualifying or shortlisting thresholds for the stated category and admission cycle, not confirmed admission. Programme fees are indicative for the specified batches and may exclude additional charges. Candidates should verify the latest placement reports, 2027–29 admission criteria and fee schedules directly on the respective institutional websites.
6. IIM vs IIT MBA Fees: Which Is More Affordable?
One of the strongest reasons to compare IIT MBA programmes with IIMs is the difference in educational investment.
An expensive MBA is not necessarily poor value. Equally, an affordable programme does not automatically produce a better career outcome.
Consider a student choosing between an IIM programme with fees of ₹26 lakh and an IIT management programme with tuition of ₹12 lakh.
The difference in advertised fees may be substantial, but the comparison is incomplete until both total costs are calculated on the same basis.
A proper MBA budget should include tuition, accommodation, mess expenses, admission charges, refundable deposits, travel, personal expenditure, laptop or study materials and education-loan interest.
Compare total investment, not tuition alone
For example, IIT Delhi’s published ₹12 lakh figure is tuition, whereas IIM Bangalore’s ₹26 lakh fee includes several campus services and hostel-room charges.
Treating both numbers as directly comparable total living-and-study costs would therefore be misleading.
Students should ask each institution for a complete programme-wise fee schedule and determine the additional expenses applicable to their situation.
MBA4U advice: If your family must finance most of the MBA through a bank loan, calculate the expected EMI and repayment burden before paying the admission acceptance fee.
7. IIM vs IIT MBA Placements: Which Offers Better Salary Opportunities?
Placement opportunities are often the deciding factor for MBA aspirants.
Established IIMs generally attract a wide range of management recruiters. Leading IIT management schools also recruit across consulting, finance, analytics, operations, technology and other sectors.
However, comparing only average salary figures is risky.
A school’s advertised average CTC may be influenced by exceptional offers, international positions, variable bonuses or a relatively small graduating batch.
Different schools can also use different compensation-reporting conventions.
How to compare placement reports correctly
Before selecting a programme, examine:
- The graduating batch and the year of the report.
- Average and median compensation, where separately reported.
- Domestic versus international compensation.
- Fixed salary versus total CTC or earning potential.
- Placement participation and percentage placed.
- Recruiter names, roles and functional distribution.
- The nature of placements: consulting, finance, analytics, marketing, operations or others.
For instance, SJMSOM IIT Bombay has published a final placement summary for its Class of 2026. Students should consult that report rather than relying on a salary figure copied from an older comparison article.
Similarly, IIM Ahmedabad’s audited placement reporting framework needs to be understood before comparing its compensation statistics with another school’s CTC figures.
Which is better for high-paying roles?
If your priority is strategy consulting, investment banking or broad corporate leadership exposure, established IIMs deserve serious consideration.
If you are interested in product management, analytics, technology consulting or operations, IIT management schools can be particularly relevant options.
Nevertheless, both groups of institutions may offer roles across these areas. Career outcomes also depend on academic performance, internships, prior experience, interview preparation and the recruitment market.
There is no guaranteed salary advantage simply because a degree comes from an IIM or an IIT.
8. IIM vs IIT MBA ROI: Which Offers Better Return on Investment?
Return on investment (ROI) is one of the most practical considerations in an MBA decision.
A programme with comparatively lower fees and competitive placements may provide an attractive financial proposition. However, measuring ROI involves more than dividing the average salary by the course fee.
The correct approach is to consider total education expenditure, lost earnings during the MBA, expected post-MBA income, loan interest and long-term career growth.
An illustrative comparison
Consider two hypothetical admission offers.
| Factor | College A | College B |
|---|---|---|
| Total MBA investment | ₹28 lakh | ₹15 lakh |
| Illustrative annual post-MBA CTC | ₹28 lakh | ₹21 lakh |
| Total funding requirement | Higher | Lower |
| Potential loan repayment burden | Higher | Lower |
| Career value | Depends on roles and growth | Depends on roles and growth |
These are hypothetical amounts used only to explain the financial comparison. They are not reported fees or placement outcomes of any particular institution.
College B may offer a lower initial financial burden. But College A could still be preferable if it offers substantially better access to the student’s desired career opportunities.
Similarly, a student who already has a strong technical background may find an IIT MBA particularly valuable if the curriculum and recruiters match their intended career transition.
How students should calculate MBA ROI
Use the following formula for an illustrative financial analysis:
\[ \text{Simple ROI}=\frac{\text{Financial benefit}-\text{Total investment}}{\text{Total investment}}\times100 \]
For a meaningful MBA comparison, define the financial benefit over a specific period, such as five years, and estimate incremental take-home earnings compared with not pursuing the MBA.
Do not simply substitute first-year CTC for the total financial benefit.
Also consider non-financial benefits, such as professional networking, leadership opportunities, career flexibility and entrepreneurship exposure.
9. Which Is Better for MBA Specialisations?
Students should select an MBA institution partly based on the type of work they want to pursue.
| Career Interest | IIM MBA | IIT MBA |
|---|---|---|
| Management consulting | Strong consideration, especially at established IIMs | Competitive opportunities at leading IIT management schools |
| Finance and investment banking | Strong consideration where relevant recruiters and alumni are present | Opportunities exist; inspect finance placement distribution |
| Marketing and brand management | Established business-management ecosystems | Opportunities depend on school and recruiting companies |
| Business analytics | Relevant programmes and electives at multiple IIMs | Potential advantages through quantitative and interdisciplinary exposure |
| Product management | Relevant opportunities, including technology companies | Attractive option when product and technology-oriented recruiters participate |
| Operations and supply chain | Strong options at relevant IIMs | Strong consideration, particularly where operations and technical exposure align |
| General management | Broad opportunities at established IIMs | Available at relevant IIT management schools |
| Entrepreneurship | Incubation, mentoring and alumni networks | Access to technology innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystems |
No institution should be selected solely because a particular specialisation appears on its website.
Students should also examine course depth, faculty expertise, electives, industry projects, internship opportunities and relevant final placement roles.
For example, a student interested in business analytics should determine whether the programme offers sufficient coverage of statistics, business decision-making, data analytics and applied projects, rather than relying on a specialisation label.
10. Is an IIT MBA Better for Engineers?
An IIT MBA can be an attractive option for engineering graduates, but it is not automatically better.
Consider a mechanical engineer with three years of manufacturing experience who wants to transition into supply chain consulting.
A management school with strong operations courses, manufacturing connections and relevant recruiters may suit that student particularly well.
Now consider a software engineer who wants to shift into corporate strategy or investment banking.
A leading IIM with appropriate corporate recruitment opportunities could be preferable, even though the student has a technical background.
Similarly, engineers interested in product management may benefit from both IIM and IIT programmes.
The deciding question should be: Which programme has the curriculum, recruiter access and alumni experience most closely aligned with my intended role?
11. Is an IIM MBA Better for Commerce, Arts and Science Graduates?
IIMs are often a natural starting point for graduates from commerce, arts, science, economics and business administration backgrounds.
Many IIM flagship programmes consider candidates from diverse academic backgrounds, subject to their admission rules.
However, non-engineering graduates should not overlook IIT MBA opportunities.
IIT Bombay’s current published admission rules explicitly recognise various academic backgrounds, including arts, commerce, economics, management and medicine-related qualifications.
IIT Jodhpur also accepts qualifying bachelor’s degrees across disciplines under its stated eligibility policy.
A B.Com graduate interested in finance, for example, may consider an IIM and an eligible IIT management programme, comparing the strength of finance electives and the quality of relevant placements.
A BA Economics graduate interested in consulting or analytics should apply the same approach.
The key is to check degree eligibility first, and then compare opportunities.
12. IIM vs IIT MBA: Campus Life, Alumni Network and Industry Exposure
The MBA experience extends beyond classroom teaching.
At IIMs, management-focused student committees, case competitions, business clubs, consulting activities and networking events are central features of the student experience.
Students regularly interact with peers interested in finance, marketing, strategy, operations and entrepreneurship.
At IITs, MBA students may also interact with researchers, engineering students, technology entrepreneurs and innovation-focused initiatives.
This interdisciplinary environment can be particularly useful for students interested in technical products, emerging technologies or technology-based businesses.
Does the alumni network matter?
Yes, but students should evaluate the relevant alumni network rather than only its overall size.
An established IIM may offer a larger management-specific alumni network across consulting, finance and general management.
An IIT may provide connections in engineering, technology, research and entrepreneurship alongside its MBA alumni community.
Neither network guarantees employment. Its value depends on engagement, mentorship, professional relevance and how graduates maintain relationships throughout their careers.
13. IIM vs IIT MBA: Which Should You Choose?
Rather than declaring one category universally superior, consider these realistic admission situations.
Situation 1: You get IIM Ahmedabad and IIT Bombay
For a candidate seeking a broad management career in consulting, finance or general management, IIM Ahmedabad would ordinarily deserve very strong consideration because of its established management-focused ecosystem.
However, a candidate with specific financial constraints or technology-related career interests should still compare actual fees, scholarships, recruiters and preferred roles before accepting an offer.
Situation 2: You get a newer IIM and IIT Delhi
This is a more nuanced comparison.
IIT Delhi’s management programme may be particularly competitive when course fees, relevant placements and career interests are considered.
The newer IIM could still be preferable if it has a stronger fit with the student’s intended industry, desired learning environment or particular career objectives.
Do not choose solely on the basis of the IIM label.
Situation 3: You are a software engineer interested in product management
Compare MBA programmes based on product-management recruitment, analytics electives, internships and alumni in relevant companies.
Leading IIT management schools may be especially worth considering, but relevant IIM programmes should remain on the shortlist.
Situation 4: You are financing the entire MBA through a loan
Total cost, scholarships, repayment obligations and realistic placement outcomes become especially important.
A lower-cost IIT MBA may offer an attractive financial proposition.
However, the decision should still account for the specific job roles and long-term opportunities you are seeking.
14. How to Prepare for IIM and IIT MBA Admission 2027–29
Candidates planning to enter a two-year MBA programme in 2027 should focus on CAT 2026 and the admission policies applicable to the 2027–29 batch.
A sensible preparation strategy includes consistent work across all three CAT sections:
- Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC)
- Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR)
- Quantitative Ability (QA)
Regular mock tests, detailed error analysis and sectional practice are essential.
Candidates should also maintain their academic records, work-experience documentation and reservation-category certificates, wherever applicable.
Importantly, applications to IIT management programmes are generally separate from CAT registration. Students should follow each school’s application portal after checking the officially announced admission schedule.
For example, SJMSOM IIT Bombay published a separate MBA application process for the 2026–28 batch, following the CAT 2025 examination.
For structured preparation, explore the CAT 2026 Preparation Hub on MBA4U.in, including practice tests, mock tests, previous-year questions, CAT score-versus-percentile guidance and college-selection resources.
15. Common Mistakes Students Make While Comparing IIM and IIT MBA Programmes
The first mistake is assuming that all IIMs are better than all IIT management schools.
The second is believing that every IIT MBA has the same eligibility requirements or specialises exclusively in technology management.
Another common mistake is comparing programme fees without checking whether hostel, mess and other charges are included.
Students also sometimes rely excessively on average salary figures without examining the placement year, median compensation, job roles or reporting methodology.
Finally, some applicants focus entirely on college reputation and neglect their own career preferences.
An MBA programme should help you move towards a realistic professional goal. A prestigious institution with a poor individual fit may be less useful than a carefully selected alternative.
16. Frequently Asked Questions About IIM vs IIT MBA

For domestic admission to the major full-time IIT MBA programmes discussed here, CAT is generally required. Alternative pathways may apply to particular candidate categories or programmes.
Which offers better long-term career growth?
Neither guarantees superior career growth. The quality of the programme, initial job, professional performance, career decisions and subsequent experience all influence outcomes.
17. Final Verdict: IIM vs IIT MBA — Which Is the Better Choice?
An MBA from an established IIM may be particularly attractive for students seeking extensive management-focused alumni exposure, established corporate recruitment relationships and broad leadership opportunities.
An MBA from a leading IIT management school may offer a compelling combination of management education, technology-oriented exposure and potentially lower educational investment.
But the final decision should never be based on the institution’s name alone.
Compare admission eligibility, total fees, recent placements, median compensation where available, recruiter profiles, curriculum and your own career objectives.
For some students, IIM Ahmedabad or IIM Bangalore may clearly be the preferred choice. For others, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi or another established IIT management school may provide a better match.
The best MBA is not simply the one with the most recognisable name. It is the one that offers the strongest combination of learning, affordability, relevant opportunities and long-term career suitability for you.
