XAT 2027 Eligibility Criteria
The official XAT 2027 FAQ states that candidates need a recognised bachelor’s degree of at least three years’ duration, or an equivalent qualification, in any discipline.
Students appearing for their final degree examinations are also eligible provided they complete their final examinations by 12 June 2027. Indian candidates seeking admission through XAT are required to appear for XAT 2027, while eligible NRI, Foreign, OCI and PIO candidates may have GMAT-based options subject to programme rules.
Can final-year students apply?

Is work experience compulsory?
Not for XAT itself.

For the current pattern, the first three aptitude sections receive approximately 170 minutes collectively, while GK receives around 10 minutes. There are no sectional time limits, and candidates can move between sections during the examination.
XAT 2027 marking scheme
The official pattern currently specifies:
- +1 mark for a correct answer
- –0.25 mark for an incorrect answer
- Up to 8 questions may be left unanswered without penalty
- From the ninth unattempted question onward, a –0.10 mark penalty per skipped question applies
- GK does not have negative marking
- GK does not contribute to the overall percentile/cut-off score but may be considered in XLRI’s selection process.
That last point changes test strategy significantly. Blindly skipping difficult questions throughout the paper can eventually attract a penalty.

The biggest adjustment is Decision Making.

Decision Making

Understanding XAT Cut-offs Properly
Students often ask, “What XAT percentile guarantees admission?”
There is no such guaranteed percentile.

A CAT aspirant usually does not need to restart preparation from zero. The larger challenge is adapting to XAT’s Decision Making, GK and exam strategy.
Who May Consider Another Option?
XAT should not automatically replace every other MBA exam.
Consider CAT as a priority if your principal targets are IIMs and institutions where CAT is the primary route.
Consider NMAT or SNAP if NMIMS or Symbiosis institutions dominate your college list.
A working professional may also find that an Executive MBA, one-year management programme or GMAT/GRE route fits their experience better than a standard two-year MBA.

Two Realistic Student Scenarios
Scenario 1: CAT aspirant targeting XLRI as well
Suppose Rohan is preparing seriously for CAT 2026 and wants IIMs, XLRI, XIM and IMT.
Dropping XAT simply because CAT is his main examination would unnecessarily reduce his options. A sensible approach is to maintain CAT preparation through November, practise Decision Making alongside it, and then spend December primarily adapting to XAT.
Scenario 2: Student with a ₹15 lakh total budget
Suppose Ananya gets a respectable XAT percentile but her family has a strict education budget.
Applying to every well-known private B-school merely because it accepts XAT may not be sensible. She should compare tuition, hostel costs, education-loan burden, placement disclosures, programme fit and scholarships before paying multiple application fees.
An entrance percentile expands options. It does not remove the need for financial judgement.
Advantages and Limitations of XAT
Advantages
XAT provides access to a broad set of MBA/PGDM institutions and gives CAT aspirants another major admission opportunity in January. Its absence of sectional time limits also gives candidates greater freedom to decide their own section order under the current pattern.
The Decision Making section can also reward students who are comfortable interpreting complex situations rather than relying only on formula-based aptitude.
Limitations
XAT requires some specialised preparation, particularly for Decision Making.

And a strong XAT percentile alone does not guarantee admission because institutes may consider interviews, academics, work experience and other profile factors.
